This article includes Stranger Things season 4 volume 1 spoilers.
Stranger Things 4 delivered one of the show's biggest and best twists ever, and the Duffer Brothers, as usual, left some hints before the big reveal. Three different tales were established over the course of the first seven episodes, all of which eventually came together in a stunning display of storytelling. The Creel's encounter with a "devil," Vecna's Curse, and Eleven Stranger Things' newly discovered memories from the Hawkins Lab all came together in a brilliant way. It was revealed that the major villain of Season 4 was made right in the Hawkins Lab, starting out as Victor's son Henry Creel and eventually becoming Doctor Brenner's Number One.
El's escape from Hawkins Lab, which has been a mystery since the first episode of Stranger Things in 2016, was finally answered. Not only that, but the Lab has mostly remained a mystery, as its deliberately unethical methods have yet to be fully probed, and it's unknown what started it all. Brenner is a morally ambiguous character at best, and pure evil at worst. Stranger Things must have only touched the surface of what went on in the Lab by taking children from their moms to experiment on them in torturous ways. Audiences, on the other hand, now know where it all began: Number One.
Number One was born Henry Creel, the son of Virginia and Victor Creel, and was born with powerful telepathic abilities. He lapsed into a coma after murdering his family and was eventually rescued by Brenner, who had learnt of his alleged powers through his mother. Brenner, unable to manage One's unpredictable abilities, sought the next best thing: recreating them, which led to Eleven Stranger Things. Brenner implanted him with a power-dampening chip and kept him in the Lab as an orderly, fearful of what would happen if his evil was ever released.
Jamie Campbell Bower's casting as the 'Friendly Orderly' who befriends Eleven Stranger Things in the laboratory is possibly the most obvious evidence to Vecna's true identity. In some of her older memories recovered by the Nina Project, he appears prominently. His substantial screen time, along with the fact that he is a well-known actor, suggests that his character will be more than meets the eye. Furthermore, unlike any other Upside Down creature, Vecna has rather human characteristics, implying that his roots must be more genuine to life than anything else in the Upside Down. As a result, Jamie's 'Friendly Orderly,' a new member to the Stranger Things group, brought the two characters closer together than ever before. This, combined with the fact that he gets credited in every episode he appears in - even when the 'Friendly Orderly' seen at the laboratory does not - should have been a significant clue to his true identity as the villain Vecna.
Most viewers were taken aback by the season 4 premiere of Stranger Things. It depicts Eleven Stranger Things, drenched in blood, standing in Hawkins' Rainbow Room, surrounded by the bodies of her siblings and sisters. This sets up one of the show's major bait and switches, causing viewers to assume Eleven Stranger Thigns committed such atrocities, which is why she suppressed the memory and refers to herself as a monster so regularly.
The 'Friendly Orderly' who had gotten to know Eleven Stranger Things was the one who killed the entire lab, as he is the powerful Number One; not just a myth, but a real person, as shown in episode 7. The victims all had the same injuries: horrifyingly broken bones and hauntingly bleeding eye sockets. Even El, despite being smeared with blood, had blood seeping from her eyes, which corresponds to Vecna's curse. Chrissy's death occurs in the same way later in the episode. Her arms and legs start to snap outward, her mouth clicks sideways, and her eye sockets start to hemorrhage, just like the lab rats. All of Vecna's victims have the same telltale traits, and the fact that Eleven Stranger Things has them as well suggests not just her innocence, but also that the evil behind the deed originated in Hawkins lab.
Something was certainly going on with the Creel family that tied them to Vecna, based on the intense focus on them. Because Chrissy's body matched that of Victor's family, the plot implied that Victor was responsible for her murder, although this was just a red herring. As Nancy and Robin learn more about the genuine tale, Victor (Robert Englund) recalls how the torture began with the appearance of dead animals on their property. The first of these deceased creatures, a rabbit, is discovered by Alice. Henry isn't visible in the scene, and Alice appears to be terrified as she dashes back to the house after noticing it. Victor recalls them being "mutilated," and dismisses the possibility that it was the work of wildcats. The fact that it was done by a person is implied by this description. The mutilation of something, as well as the fact that the dead rabbit appears at the foot of the children's slide, as if it was placed there on purpose, is a very planned act. Victor goes on to explain that it was the work of something "neither animal nor human," which in many ways suits Henry Creel/Vecna.
In fact, Henry is noticeably absent as Victor relates several of his family's demonic experiences. The description of Henry as a gentle, sensitive boy helps to explain his absence in the story, yet some subtleties reveal his depravity. When Virginia is killed at the dinner table, the camera captures Alice's full reaction as she shouts and cries. The camera, on the other hand, appears to avoid Henry at all costs, as his emotion would be one of joy rather than fear. When Victor tries to break down the door to get the kids out, Alice cries and tries to run, but Henry merely remains there, oddly calm, with no intention of leaving until the massacre is completed.
Stranger Things Vecna's House Before the major revelation in Stranger Things 4, Victor reminded viewers that "all evil must have a home." Victor's exposition, in which his family's home is prominently featured, is followed by Max's encounter with Vecna. The crimson smokey location she's led is unlike anything else she's seen in the Upside Down. She goes through the smoke till she comes across a derelict house. The foreboding clock that has been chiming hovers in the air, and the Creel family door, which audiences were shown only scenes before, is also visible. Vecna is likewise perplexed by Max's intrusion into the scenario, emphasizing the fact that this is a personal location for him. This, possibly the most blatant of all the signals, was expertly concealed amidst the tense drama of Max's life-saving song performance.
Following Virginia's assassination, Victor's daughter Alice was kidnapped. When Victor awoke from his musical trance, he discovered Alice's body, which had been broken and bent in the same way as Vecna's other victims, but Henry was only unconscious. By all reports, he appeared to be unhurt. He appeared to have gone into a coma and had not fought a vicious and murderous monster. There was no logical reason for the demon Victor claimed lived in their house to'spare' Henry after this revelation. Why would Vecna leave Henry unscathed after killing the Creel family's mother and daughter so brutally? The only logical explanation is that Henry was involved in the murders, which turned out to be the truth in Stranger Things' fourth season.
