Every Superhero Film to Be Released in 2022

In a single year, Marvel and DC will release a total of six more superhero flicks. Here's a list of all the superhero movies coming out in 2022.

The year 2022 is jam-packed with superhero films from Marvel and DC, so if superhero movie weariness is a real thing, 2022 may be the year that everyone discovers it. Six additional superhero pictures are set to be released in 2022, despite many delays and release date shifts. Some of them are even coming out within weeks of each other in theaters.

The discussion over superhero fatigue has raged for years, with a number of filmmakers, performers, and critics openly stating their desire for audiences to weary of comic book films. This isn't a new issue; it's been going on since at least 2012's The Avengers. Despite the fact that 2020 was a relatively quiet year in contrast to previous years, the superhero genre is showing no signs of slowing down in 2021, with the expansion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to include Disney+ series like WandaVision and Loki. Marvel's domination at the box office was demonstrated by Avengers: Endgame, which shattered Avatar's record as the highest-grossing film of all time, and with to the success of Aquaman and Joker, it's safe to say that DC is learning how to stay up with Marvel. Superhero movies will continue to dominate the big screen for years to come, with both Marvel and DC generating massive hits on a regular basis.

Because of the pandemic, 2022 is a significant year for the genre (and the movie business in general), especially because 2020 had no Marvel blockbusters and a couple of the year's releases were moved to 2021 instead. As a result, Marvel and DC each released multiple films in 2022, with six more on the way. Here is a list of all the remaining superhero films that will be released in 2022.

Thor: Love and Thunder - July 8, 2022.

Taika Waititi returns to write and direct the fourth Thor film, making him the first Asgardian hero in the MCU to receive four standalone films. Of course, Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor, alongside Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Natalie Portman reprise her role as Jane Foster for the first time since Thor: The Dark World. Jane is poised to play Thor's feminine equivalent in Thor: Love and Thunder. Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) and Zeus (Russell Crowe), the former of whom is the film's major villain, are two new figures who have joined the fold. Thor: Love and Thunder, like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, was subjected to yet another postponement as Marvel pushed its release date back a few months. It was originally scheduled to be released in May 2022, but it will now be released in July 2022.

DC League of Super-Pets - July 29, 2022

DC's own animated film, DC League of Super-Pets, will be released in theaters in 2022. The film is likely to feature on super-powered animal sidekicks from DC Comics, such as Krypto the Super Dog, Streaky the Supercat, Comet the Super Horse, Beppo the Super Monkey, and others, and will be directed by Wreck-It Ralph co-writers Jared Stern and Sam Levine. Although few details about the film have been released, it has been announced that Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Marc Maron would voice Krypto the Superdog, Ace the Bat-Hound, and Lex Luthor, respectively. The Legion of Super-Pets, a 1960s comic book squad, is the inspiration for the film.

Black Adam - October 21, 2022

After numerous delays and a hiatus from the filming schedule, the Shazam! spinoff film Black Adam will finally hit theaters in October 2022, assuming it isn't pushed back again. The DC film, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and starring The Rock as Black Adam, is based on a script by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani. Since Black Adam has been in development since 2014, it appears that 2022 will finally be the film's turn to shine.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever - November 11, 2022

When Black Panther was released in February 2018, it broke record after record, and it didn't take long for it to become the fifth MCU film to break the $1 billion mark at the global box office. Outside of The Avengers, Black Panther is the most successful MCU film. Marvel will release the highly anticipated Black Panther: Wakanda Forever four years after the original film. Due to the death of Chadwick Boseman, the star of the first film, the sequel is expected to focus on the other Black Panther characters that dwell in Wakanda rather than the Black Panther himself. The movie was supposed to be out in July 2022, however it was pushed back to November, taking Captain Marvel 2's place. Production has been halted as of this writing due to an on-set injury to star Letitia Wright.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods - December 16, 2022

Shazam!, the seventh DCEU film to visit theaters, debuted in 2019 to largely good critical acclaim and box office success. Shazam!, a humorous story about a little child who can transform into an adult superhero with the utterance of a single word, to be followed by two sequels in 2022: Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Shazam! 2 promises even more heroic action, raising the stakes of Billy Batson's adventure by introducing new enemies, exotic beasts, and locations from Western mythology. Unlike most of the other films on DC's slate for 2022 and beyond, the Shazam! sequel's release date has been moved up rather than pushed back, because it will be ready for release sooner than The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, both of which require additional visual effects work before they can be released.

Batgirl - December 2022 (Possibly)

Unlike its DCEU contemporaries, Batgirl will not be shown in theaters; instead, it will premiere exclusively on HBO Max, most likely in late 2022. No official release date has been announced, but producer comments and hints have led to speculation that Batgirl will be released in December 2022, making it one of the last DC films following The Batman this year, pushing out Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Flash. Barbara Gordon (played by Leslie Grace) is James Gordon's daughter who adopts a superhero persona based on her hero, Batman (Michael Keaton's return Dark Knight). It's unclear how The Flash's reintroduction of Keaton fits into the new DCEU timeline with Batgirl, thus Batgirl could still be postponed until after the reported Flashpoint incident. Even though it will be released on streaming rather than in theaters, Batgirl is shaping up to be a must-see superhero film in 2022 if it occurs.

What Fans of Superheroes Can Expect in 2023

While 2022 will be one of the most superhero-packed years to date, 2023 will also bring a slew of new TV and cinema shows and movies. Because Marvel, DC, and Sony haven't fully recovered from their COVID-19 delays, several of the films scheduled for 2020-2022 have been moved back to 2023. Sony's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Marvel's The Marvels, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Marvel's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and DC's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, The Flash, and Blue Beetle are among them. This is, of course, in addition to a slew of new superhero TV shows being released, the most of which are on Disney+ and produced by Marvel. In 2023, there's also Sony's latest Spider-Man villain film, Kraven the Hunter, to look forward to, though Morbius' collapse might dampen hopes. Overall, 2023, like 2022, will likely push the boundaries of superhero fatigue with a bumper crop of Marvel and DC film releases.
